Foundations of Faith Community Nursing Course

This is a retreat-style course that offers a 16-week hybrid class with both online and in-person meetings held on Â鶹ֱ²¥’s centrally located campus. Registered Nurses who attend may elect the online option if desired.

Faith Community Nursing (FCN) or commonly called parish nursing is a specialty nursing practice recognized by the American Nurses Association since 1998. FCN’s provide intentional care of the spirit to members of a faith community to promote wellness and prevent illness.

The course is open to registered nurses of all faith traditions with an active license in the state of their practice (and junior/senior level Â鶹ֱ²¥ BSN Students are eligible for elective credit). Upon completion of the foundational course, nurses will be able to develop and maintain a faith community nursing practice within their community of faith.

Format: This course is offered in a hybrid format, with in-person meetings, and online instruction and discussions. The program guides the nurse in engagement within their own community of faith. The learning modules will include mini-lectures, discussions, readings, reflections, scriptures, prayer, case studies, and other learning activities.

Content: The fifteen content areas include the following four major concepts:

  • Spirituality
  • Professionalism
  • Holistic Health
  • Community Health

The course offers a total of 36.5 hours of content. The Foundations of Faith Community Nursing Curriculum (2019) is the approved curriculum of the .

Continuing Education

Participants who complete 80% or more of the course and complete and submit a continuing nursing professional development activity evaluation will earn 36.5 contact hours.

This activity is being offered by Â鶹ֱ²¥ (joint provider) and Orbis Education (provider). Learners who successfully complete all requirements are eligible to obtain a 36.5 contact hours certificate of completion.

Orbis Education is accredited as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
