About Dean Candlish

Karen Candlish, JD ’12 serves as the Dean of Students. She advocates for students who need support and oversees housing, dining, student activities, and the student conduct process.

Dean Candlish is an alumna of Â鶹ֱ²¥, graduating in 2012 with a B.A. in English. She furthered her education at Indiana University, earning a M.S. in Education with a concentration in Higher Education and Student Affairs in 2014 and a J.D. in 2020. She returned to Â鶹ֱ²¥ as a staff member in 2014. She held various roles in Alumni Relations and Residence Life before becoming the Dean of Students in 2019.

As dean, my top priority is student success. Much of my work focuses on how to get students engaged on campus – enriching their student experience and providing opportunities to use their in-class learning outside of the classroom through leadership opportunities. At the same time, I am working to remove barriers to student success and helping students manage the bumps in the road that come up sometimes.

Conduct Expectations

The core values of student conduct at Â鶹ֱ²¥ are based on the Franciscan Sponsorship Values: Dignity of the Individual, Peace and Justice, Reconciliation, and Responsible Stewardship. They are:

  • Integrity - Â鶹ֱ²¥ students exemplify honesty, honor, and a respect for truth in all of their dealings.
  • Community - Â鶹ֱ²¥ students are invited to build and enhance their community.
  • Social Justice - Â鶹ֱ²¥ students are just and equitable in their treatment of all members of the community and act to discourage and/or intervene to prevent unjust and inequitable behaviors.
  • Respect - Â鶹ֱ²¥ students show positive regard for each other, for property, and for the community.
  • Responsibility - Â鶹ֱ²¥ students are given and accept a high level of responsibility to self, to others, and to the community.

Â鶹ֱ²¥ students are responsible for knowing the information, policies, and procedures outlined in the Code of Student Rights and ResponsibilitiesStudents are also responsible for knowing other printed university policies, such as policies in the student-athlete handbook, housing contract, and IT acceptable use policy, for example. The university reserves the right to make changes to the code as necessary, and one those changes are posted online, they are in effect. 

In support of the Dignity of the Individual, one of our Franciscan sponsorship values, Â鶹ֱ²¥ does not tolerate acts of violence of any kind, including sexual violence or sexual harassment. Members of the Â鶹ֱ²¥ community have the right to be free from all forms of sexual harassment. All members of the community are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that maintains an environment free from sexual harassment.

Â鶹ֱ²¥ supports Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, which prohibits discrimination based on gender in educational programs receiving federal financial assistance. Title IX also protects students and employees both male and female, from unlawful sexual harassment in school activities. Sexual harassment also includes sexual violence.

Title IX was enacted to ensure: “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”

“Discriminatory Harassment” is harassment based upon an individual’s actual or perceived membership in a protected class. Harassing conduct may take various forms, including, name-calling, graphic or written statements (including the use of cell phones or the Internet), or other conduct that may be physically threatening, harmful, or humiliating.

“Protected class” means age, race, color, creed, religion, ancestry, national or ethnic origin, sex/gender, sexual orientation, disability, genetic information, military status, veteran status, familial status or any other protected category under applicable local, state or federal law, ordinance or regulation.

Each member of the university community bears responsibility for their conduct and assumes reasonable responsibility for the behavior of others. When members of the community fail to exemplify these values by engaging in violations of the rules below, conduct procedures are used to assert and uphold the policies, including policies outlined in the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities and the employee handbook.

Campus Vibrancy

Students and student organizations can apply for the Dean of Students Programming Grant Fund.

Dean Candlish created a fund to support student events. To be eligible for funding, applications must meet the following requirements:

  • Applicants must be undergraduate students at Â鶹ֱ²¥ in good academic and behavioral standing;
  • Applications must be submitted at least 2 weeks prior to the date when funds are needed;
  • The event must be open to the entire Â鶹ֱ²¥ Community;
  • Applicants must submit a draft budget; and
  • Funding must be used to plan an event that is:
    • a social program happening on the weekend,
    • a diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging program, or
    • a leadership development program.

Preference is given to events planned collaboratively, by multiple student organizations, or students working with faculty or staff for an event. .
