Minor in Music

If you have an interest in the performing arts, consider adding a minor in music to your plan of study.

Whether your passion is performing under the bright lights on the main stage or you are looking for more knowledge about music and the performing arts, a music minor will enhance your career preparation and enrich your major.

Earning a music minor enables you to use your creative talents and energies—and gain important skills useful for careers in business, communication, education, history, theatre, studio art, psychology, and many other fields.

Required Core Courses:

  • MUS 125 Music Theory I, 3 cr
  • MUS 126 Music Theory II, 3 cr
  • MUS 166 Aural Skills I, 1 cr
  • MUS 167 Aural Skills II, 1 cr
  • MUL 125 Class Piano I, .5 cr
  • MUL 126 Class Piano II, .5 cr
  • MUS 127 Appreciation of Music, 3cr
  • MUS XXX Applied Lessons (six semesters)*, 3 cr
  • MUS XXX Large Ensemble (six semesters)*, 3 cr

One class from the following:

  • MUS 340 Music of World Cultures, 3 cr
  • MUS 231 Foundations of Jazz Pedagogy, 2 cr
  • MUS 251 Music Technology, 2 cr
  • MUS 257 Music in Catholic Worship, 3 cr
  • MUS 268 History of Musical Theatre, 2 cr
  • MUS 330 Basic Conducting, 2 cr
  • MUS 328 Instrumental/Choral Arranging, 2 cr

Total Credit Hours: 20-21

*This requirement can be waived based on when a student enters into the program at the discretion of the department chair.

*Music minors must participate in either MUS 159, MUS 102, MUS 108, or MUS 103 for their large ensemble requirement (other ensemble options for pianists, organists, and guitar players).
